Leo will take on Atlanta this Saturday as Inter Miami play Matchday 23, just days after scoring four goals and providing an assist in the previous round against Montreal. The Argentine has netted 21 goals in the 23 games he has played so far this season.

Leo has faced the Georgia club eight times, scoring seven goals and providing three assists.

After all this time that has passed since the final, and after thinking about it deeply, I want to tell you all that I am retiring from the national team…

It was a decision that hurt — and still hurts — deep in my soul, but I understand that this is the moment. Time is running out and stages begin to close, and this is one that hurts me a lot. I love, loved, and will always love being part of the national team. I emptied myself; I have nothing left to give, and besides, there are great young players coming up who deserve their place.

Thank you for all the affection over these 20 years. I will miss hearing you from the pitch so much. Now I will be one of you, supporting and cheering from the outside (in good times and bad, even more so).

*I wrote these words on July 21, two days after the final. Today, after what happened with my dad, I am even more convinced than before.

Inter Miami defeated Montreal 7–1 and delivered a historic night by achieving the biggest win in its history, in a match where Leo scored four goals and provided an assist. In doing so, the Argentine records his first four‑goal performance in MLS, on a night where two of his goals came from free kicks. With these four goals, Leo reaches 927 goals in 1,171 professional matches.

The two free‑kick goals put Leo close to breaking another ranking: the all‑time free‑kick scorers list. With his set‑piece brace against Montreal, the Argentine reaches 74 goals and surpasses Juninho Pernambucano by two, sitting second and four behind Marcelinho Carioca, the top free‑kick scorer in football history.

Pa, todavía no puedo creer que te hayas ido. No caigo, o mejor dicho, no quiero caer. Se me hace muy difícil imaginarme que ya no te voy a ver más, que no vamos a hablar más. Sé que estabas sufriendo y que es lo mejor, pero te fuiste muy pronto. Todavía nos quedaba mucho por disfrutar juntos.

Tanto me pedías que juegue el último Mundial y días antes de empezar fue cuando peor te pusiste. Era la primera vez que no ibas a estar en un torneo, pero mamá me decía que ibas a estar mejor y que ibas a estar bien para poder viajar. Yo te decía que íbamos a llegar a la final así podías viajar.

Cada vez que terminaba un partido esperaba y extrañaba tu mensaje. Ahí me di cuenta de que la situación era fea de verdad. Así y todo, no dejaba de pensar en llegar lo más lejos posible, para darte tiempo y que vieras un partido. Llegamos a la final y no pudiste estar. Quería ganarla para llevártela y mostrarte una nueva. No pude, las piernas no me daban más. Esta vez intenté ir contra mi físico, pero no pude. Nunca pude sentirme bien.

Cuando llegué creías que habíamos perdido la final por penales. No pudimos hablar de nada de todo lo que pasó. No pudiste disfrutar nada. No fuimos campeones, pero no sabés cómo disfrutamos cada partido. Una vez más, tenías razón: tenía que estar y jugarlo.

Te cuento esto porque fue lo único que no pudimos hablar, porque todo lo demás ya lo sabés. Hablábamos todos los días y nos veíamos cuando se podía por mis compromisos.

No sé qué voy a hacer sin vos, no sé cómo seguir. Yo solo jugaba al fútbol y ahora tengo bastantes dudas de que vaya a seguir haciéndolo por mucho tiempo más. Estuviste al lado mío desde el principio, faltaba tan poquito para el final. ¿Por qué no aguantaste ese poquito más y terminábamos juntos?

Sé que tu felicidad era ver bien a tu familia, a tu mujer, a tus hijos y, sobre todo, sin que se enteren los otros, verme jugar a mí… 😉

Desde chiquito siempre fue así. Me llevabas a todos los entrenamientos apenas llegabas de trabajar. A muchos me llevaba mamá porque vos estabas trabajando.

Obviamente, a los partidos no faltabas a uno. Cómo sufrías viéndome y cómo disfrutabas, aunque nunca me regalabas muchos elogios.

Fuiste papá, amigo y representante. Siempre eras la persona que tenías que ser en cada momento y nunca te equivocaste en nada. Más allá de algunos reproches o peleas, siempre tenías razón. Al final se terminaba dando como vos decías.

Te voy a extrañar mucho, pero siempre vas a estar presente, y sobre todo en la educación de mis hijos, porque les enseño y los educo como ustedes lo hicieron conmigo.

Descansá en paz y cuidanos desde arriba como lo hacías acá. Gracias por todo.

Leo scored twice and provided an assist in his season debut in the Leagues Cup, a 4–1 win over Atlético de San Luis. With those two goals, the Argentine became the tournament’s top scorer so far, reaching 14 goals. Inter Miami will remain focused on the Leagues Cup and will face Rayados de Monterrey this weekend at the Nu Stadium.

The Argentine returns to the competition in which he won his first title with the Florida club in 2023, carrying strong personal numbers in the tournament: 12 goals and 3 assists in 11 matches.
